Position Overview:
New Futures is looking for volunteers for our After-School Program for elementary students located at The Heights at Burien. Volunteers will assist the Academic Coordinator in setting up the classroom, administering program activities, helping students individually with homework, building students’ reading and math skills, and possibly going on field trips with the group. Volunteers will also act as mentors and role models, providing companionship and friendship for students during the program.
Responsibilities:
• Assist Academic Coordinator with program activities;
• Engage and build relationships with elementary school students;
• Tutor elementary school students during after-school homework help time;
• Collaborate with Academic Coordinator to develop activities for youth;
• Option to attend field trips with youth and assist with management of the group;
• Assist with program set up, preparation of snack, clean up and other program components.
Requirements:
• An open, caring, and non-discriminatory attitude;
• Good written and oral English skills;
• Ability to pass a Washington State Background check;
• Commitment to the position for 10 weeks.
Other Skills/Abilities:
• Option for designing youth activities and offering your specific skills and talents (i.e. art workshop, dancing/drumming/music lessons, writing projects, sports clinic, math lessons, gardening, etc.)
• Knowledge of a language other than English is beneficial, but not required.

• Perform related work as assigned.
• Option for designing youth activity and offering your specific skills and talents (i.e. college and career prep, art workshop, dancing/drumming/music lessons, writing projects, sports clinic, math lessons, gardening, etc.)
Essential job requirements:
• Commit to the position for an agreed upon length of time on a regular basis dependent on your preference (either several afternoons a week, once a week or bi-weekly)
• Experience working with diverse youth in a culturally competent way; engaging with youth and staff
• High school diploma or equivalent or two years of experience working with diverse population of school-aged youngsters, preferably in an educational setting
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Preferably strong math skills.
• Great for someone interested in education, mentoring, or social services.
Background:
The Clothing Bank at Windsor Heights provides clothing free of charge to families who live in the apartment complex. It is stocked with clothing for people of all ages and sizes through donations from individuals and organizations. We rely on volunteers to keep the clothing bank clean and organized so that Windsor Heights families can continue to have a positive experience when they visit this valuable resource!
Duties:
• Sort, fold, and hang donated clothing according to age, size, and type of clothing
• Organize and maintain organization of clothing bank to provide a positive environment for families
• Alert Windsor Heights Site Manager of needs or concerns about the clothing bank
Time commitment:
• Two to four hours per week (over 1 or 2 days)
Supervision:
• Volunteers will check in with Windsor Heights staff to retrieve and return the key to the clothing bank each time they are come to volunteer
• Volunteers will be oriented to the clothing bank and their duties when they first arrive, but will otherwise be unsupervised during their shifts
