Because we partner closely with families to provide programs that respond to their needs and interests, and incorporate their values, the content and scheduling of programs can vary at each of New Futures’ sites.

For example, at The Heights at Burien, the community is predominantly Latino, and so, the annual, community-wide Mothers’ Day celebration that is organized by residents and New Futures staff reflects the music and traditions of the Latino community. At Windsor Heights, in SeaTac, where the community is more culturally diverse, the residents organize an annual Cultural Festival, which celebrates the traditions from a variety of countries and continents.

We also are flexible in adapting our programs to accommodate the needs of specific groups at our sites. At Arbor Heights, in White Center, staff shifted the hours of our Summer Program for teens, because many of them take summer school classes and all of the youth have jobs. At Windsor Heights, staff realized that our 5th and 6th grade students needed a separate program to stay engaged; they responded by organizing a program for the older children that offers slightly different activities and focuses on more long-term projects.

Did you know…

…During focus groups, parents told us that they want their children to speak, read and write Spanish. So we created children’s Spanish literacy classes.

In addition to providing a service that the community wants, research has demonstrated that children who are literate in their native language learn better in English.
