Cultural Competency Outline (PDF)
The Cultural Competency Training is for organizations with a desire to increase their employees’ capacity to engage in culturally competent work. Participants will explore various aspects of their own culture, examine how culture influences reactions, formation of ideas, as well as decision-making, and also raise personal awareness of other cultures. This training concentrates on important cultural values that individuals should be attune to while working and interacting with people of diverse populations. It does not teach people about specific cultures, but rather helps develop cultural awareness skills that can be applied to effectively working with any population. Specialized skill building modules for a variety of service sectors are also offered. Participants will enhance personal and professional cultural competency skills, thereby increasing overall organizational effectiveness. This training is conducted in six to eight hour formats.

This training offers alternative strategies to develop engagement and assessment while also working with organizations to create a detailed action plan for increasing community involvement and accountability. The Parent Involvement Training is for schools that are searching for effective methods to engage parents. One of the struggles in schools with diverse populations is that many traditional methods of involving parents are not effective in engaging diverse, low-income, and immigrant parents. While many parent involvement trainings are focused on providing skills to parents, this training offers skills for school staff. ReachOut offers alternative ideas for engagement and assessment, and suggestions for making organizational changes to increase involvement. The emphasis in this training is placed on respecting and honoring parents in order to produce better results, higher levels of involvement and ultimately more successful students. This training can be conducted in flexible four to eight hour formats.

“The trainings with ReachOut have been great because we need to think about diversity issues just by the nature of the work that we do at Big Brothers Big Sisters, but having someone come in and work with us really helps give us a focused approach to issues that come up every day. I think that it is also helping us work towards a culture shift in our agency in terms of the way we work with the varied population that we serve.”
